Cheesecake

This week we made one of my favourite desserts ever: cheesecake! I was so excited to bake my very own cheesecake but was nervous as I thought it would be difficult. After making this cake I realized that it was pretty easy. I especially loved the Oreo crumb bottom and strawberry sauce. This was a great recipe!

Apple bird

For another presentation skill we made birds out of apples in Foods class. They were more difficult to make than the cucumber shark but I think they look a lot nicer. I made my bird with a red apple but you could make it with a golden or green apple if you prefer.

Udon

We made our first savoury dish of the year and it was amazing. We made a stir fry of udon noodles, chicken, snow peas, ginger, and garlic. It was very simple to make and tasted great. I would definitely make this dish again.

Watermelon basket and cucumber shark

The last few weeks of Foods class we've been learning about presentation of food. We made a watermelon basket and a cucumber shark. I don't know where I would use these unless I worked for a cruise ship but nonetheless they were very fun to make. I think I could use a little bit of practice with a knife though because I couldn't seem to make very precise lines.

Sheep cake

Part 2 of our challenge was to use the same cake pan that we used to make our elephant cake but turn it into something else. We had to come up with our own icing instructions this time! We chose to turn our elephant into a sheep. It was much more difficult to do this cake than the elephant as we had to make our own pattern which was obviously no match to one a professional would make. In the end we had a successful product

Elephant cake

We were given a challenge in food art! We had to choose a cake pan and decorate it according to the icing instructions. My group chose an elephant cake pan. Making the cake was easy but decorating it was the exact opposite. After a long time of frustration we finally got a product we were pretty happy with: cute and delicious!

Hot Cocoa and Marshmallows

To get into the winter spirit we made hot cocoa and even made our own marshmallows from scratch in Foods class. Both were yummy, and got me feeling in the mood for some christmas music. I can't wait to make this again next winter!

Banana Splits

We learnt how to brûlée in Foods class, and tested out our new skills when we made our delicious banana splits. We used a brûlée torch to caramelize the bananas. We also added an abstract sugar decoration to our splits. I loved making the decorations! It was so much fun making a bunch of different designs with the melted sugar, and they tasted great too!

Nut Brittle

In Food Art we made "easy nut brittle". It was very tasty and indeed easy to make! I loved this recipe as it reminded me of the peanut brittle my grandma always makes for me! Next time I use this recipe I may try using different types of nuts rather than peanuts. I will most definitely make this brittle again.
